Symposia

In the past, the Trustees have organised large international symposia, which were primarily for leaders in defined areas of the two sciences supported and where the proceedings were published.  They currently organise occasional one-day meetings in London.  On a more regular basis, the Trustees organise up to eight smaller meetings each year.

The background to the smaller meetings (mini-symposia for Nutrition Meetings and symposia for Optoelectronics Meetings) is that there are many academic and scientific meetings. As scientists, one can spend a large proportion of one's working life at meetings.  Sometimes it is not clear what is gained by organising, or by attending a particular meeting.

The Rank Prize Funds mini-symposia/symposia offer a format that is different from most scientific meetings.  At most meetings, a large proportion of the audience are silent observers.  There is often no good mechanism to facilitate discussions between senior speakers (many of whom will fly in to deliver their talk, then fly out), and more particularly between junior attendees and the senior members.  Although a large scientific meeting can offer an opportunity to catch up on the latest research in some field, it is rarely an opportunity for open discussion, especially between scientists working in distinct disciplines.

The Rank Prize Funds mini-symposia/symposia offer an environment in which discussion between senior speakers, between junior speakers, and especially between senior and junior, is facilitated.  They offer the opportunity to bring together people from different disciplines to broaden everyone's understanding of a field, and potentially to provide a forum from which collaborations might spring.

The normal format of mini-symposia is for some ten leading scientists in a particular field to be invited to meet with twenty or so younger researchers (usually having less than 7 years post doctoral experience) for two and a half days of talks and discussions.

In an informal atmosphere, all participants are required to give a presentation on their work or plans and generally there are no published proceedings.
